Truck Levels
- Primary purpose?
- Outside client
- Inside client
- Sports, entertainment, news, or all of the above
- Formats supported: SD, HD, 4K, analog audio, AES, etc.
- How many sources: cameras, replace channels, audio sources, graphics, etc.?
- How many operating positions are required?
- In house crew, fixed outside crew, freelance crew? Or a mix?
- Inside client
- Sports, entertainment, news, or all of the above
- Formats supported: SD, HD, 4K, analog audio, AES, etc.
- Work flow?
- Operational duties
TD, Director, Producer, Assistant Directors and Producers, audio, replay, video
How many of each, or are some positions done by a single person?
- Equipment required to meet proposed levels?
How many racks required for the proposed equipment?
- Truck compartments?
- Production
Show truck - Enough space for lighting and music directors, etc
How many monitors required in the production monitor wall?
Front/Rear facing production compartments generally provide more console space for operators
but usually require more complicated expanding/collapsing of expandos
- Replay
Sports truck - Enough space for replay operators
- Audio
All trucks - How many audio ops required? Are sub mixes required?
- Video
All trucks - How many cameras supported? How many video operators?
- Transmission
Amount of core infrastructure equipment? Room for truck engineer's setup station(s)
- Any "sandbox" space required?
Generic work areas for any "toys" and other unexpected equipment brought in by the client?
- Truck size? Single or muliple trailers?
How much space is required for storage? Generally the larger the truck the more belly bay space
28' box truck with satellite uplink can generally hold about 6 operating positions
and about 10 racks
30' expando box truck can generally hold about 10 operating positions
and about 18 racks
45' Straight truck (no expandos) about 15 operating positions
and about 22 racks
48' double expandoes about 18 operating positions
and about 28 racks
Therefore, generally, more than 20 operating positions and 30 racks requires additional units!
- Truck attributes
Outside truck lighting
Rack orientation? Front/back? Street side orientation?
Street side row of racks requires "clamshell" outside access
Problematic for access in the winter cold
How much IO? How much internal tie lines? What types of IO?
Cold weather may require IO panels inside
How many associated "mouse holes"?
Trim for floors, walls, ceilings, and consoles?
Can stock racks be used or do they need to be custom built to maximize the available space?
Equipment with the deepest rack footprint should be identified so as to ensure they will fit
in the alloted location
How much power is required? What is the resultant cooling required?
(Rack Thermal Management)
I (current) * 400 = BTUs/hr 12,000 BTUs/hr requires one ton of cooling
Each person generates approximately 140 BTUs/hr
Internal rack target temperature: 85°
Each 10° increase above 85° decreases reliability by 40%
